The Herald revealed yesterday the Catholic Church has accepted that another priest looked on while notorious pedophile priest Vince Ryan abused one of his victims in the 1970s.

But the case has been closed after an in-depth investigation into the second priest’s identity.

The Maitland-Newcastle diocese child protection and professional conduct unit manager Helen Keevers said yesterday the church had asked Ryan in the past about whether any other clergymen were involved with him in sexual abuse incidents, but he had not given any information about other priests.

Ms Keevers said the church would not be investigating the identity of the clergyman unless police chose to reopen the case.

The church informed police and the NSW ombudsman of the new claims immediately after it was revealed in a formal statement from the victim.

The victim did not name the second priest but had given limited information about his car and other clues.

After an in-depth investigation this year, the child protection and professional conduct unit had run out of leads.

A NSW Police spokeswoman was unable to say yesterday whether there would be further investigations into the second priest.

The church had investigated whether the second priest was convicted pedophile Jim Fletcher and Ms Keevers said it could have been him or several other priests.

Ryan is serving a 20-year jail sentence for 53 offences on Hunter boys aged six to 14 between 1972 and 1991 and Fletcher was sentenced earlier this year to 10 years’ jail for the continuing assault on a teenage boy.

The diocese paid Ryan’s victim compensation several months ago.
